چکیده

Unless flavour symmetries are assumed, particle masses and mixings are generally undetermined in gauge theories. Understanding mass and mixing constitutes one of the biggest challenges in elementary particle physics. Current observations do not determine all elements of the effective neutrino mass matrix Mν completely and this will be a great challenge even for future experiments. Therefore theoretical ideas restricting the structure of Mν are needed in order to guide future searches. One such input studied extensively is the assumption that some entries in the neutrino mass matrix vanish [1]. While the phenomenological implications of the assumed zeros in the texture of Mν are straightforward to derive [2], it is a non-trivial task to produce a good symmetry leading to such zeros and a diagonal charged lepton mass matrix simultaneously. Although for any desired texture structure of the mass matrices such a symmetry is in principle always present, this symmetry and the associated Higgs content are sometimes discouragingly complex [3].

Approximate Flavour Symmetries and See-Saw Mechanism

We study the approximate flavour symmetries imposed on the lepton sector assuming see-saw mechanism as the neutrino mass structure. We apply the symmetry to various neutrino phenomenologies and obtain constraints on neutrino masses and mixings. Typeset using REVTEX [email protected] 1

Mass hierarchy and flavour mixing from discrete symmetries

are fully compatible with the so-called Tri-Bimaximal (TB) mixing pattern which corresponds to a maximal θ23, an zero θ13 and a “magic” value of solar angle: sin 2 θ12 = 1/3. It is well known that the lepton mixing angles can be understood by a mechanism of vacuum misalignment in flavour space occurring in theories with non-abelian flavour symmetries [2]. Also the charged lepton mass hierarchy ...

Textures for Neutrino Mass Matrices in Gauge Theories

We review previous work on neutrino mass textures in gauge theories. Such textures may arise as a result of flavour symmetries. In a given theory, it is possible to give a classification of heavy Majorana neutrino mass matrices, assuming the Dirac masses of the neutrinos to be of the same form as the ones of the up-quarks. Heavy Majorana neutrino mass matrices leading to large neutrino mixing, ...

Up Quark Masses from Down Quark Masses

The quark and charged lepton masses and the angles and phase of the CKM mixing matrix are nicely reproduced in a model which assumes O(3) ⊗ O(3) flavour symmetry broken by the v.e.v.’s of fields in its bi-fundamental representation. The relations among the quark mass eigenvalues, mu/mc ≈ mc/mt ≈ m2d/m2s ≈ m2s/m2b ≈ Λ2GUT/M2 Pl, follow from the broken flavour symmetry. Large tanβ is required whi...
